The Copperbelt University (CBU) is a Public University established through Act of Parliament No. 19 of 1987. The University’s core business is Teaching, Research and Consultancy as a service to the nation. The University hereby invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for appointment to the following positions:
- SENIOR SUB-LIBRARIAN (2 positions)
Location: Kitwe
Job Purpose
To provide professional leadership in the development, organisation and dissemination of information resources to support the learning, teaching and research functions of the University.
Main Duties and Accountabilities
This is the most senior academic and professional scale in the Library.
The position holder:
- Would be professional and administrative head of any of the following operational Departments at CBU Library: Technical Services; Public Services; Electronic and Special Resources (Software, networking, Digitisation, Cyber Café management) or any program assigned by the University Librarian.
- May act as University Librarian, in the absence of the incumbent.
- Provides general professional leadership on all library operations, including the use of information technology in all operations.
- Works very closely with the University Librarian on all operational matters, such as: policy issues; quality assurance (standards); staff recruitment, training and deployment, etc.
- Represents the University Librarian on School Boards and some University committees.
- Compiles the Library’s annual reports
- Acts as Recorder of minutes during Senate Library Committee meetings on behalf of the University Librarian who is the Committee Secretary
- Undertakes any other professional duties assigned through the University Librarian
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Form 5 or Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- A good first degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) from a recognised University.
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a recognised University.
- PhD in LIS or related field would be an advantage
- Preferably 5 years work experience in an academic library, at least 3 of which should be at the level of Sub-Librarian.
- Computer literate with demonstrable working knowledge of automated Library Management Systems.
- Evidence of peer reviewed publication.
- Track record of strong leadership, innovation and creativity.
- Membership to Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) and, or other relevant professional body would be an advantage.
- SUB–LIBRARIAN (2 positions)
Location: Chinsali (1), Kitwe (1)
Job Purpose
To develop, organise and maintain systematic collections of information; manage databases of digitised and other recorded research resources and make them available to library users.
Main Duties and Accountabilities
The successful candidate may be deployed to serve in any of the following roles:
- Chief Cataloguer
- Collection Development Librarian
- Special Collections Librarian
- References Librarian
- Circulation and User Services Manager
Main duties and accountabilities revolve around and include the following:
- Work generation, distribution and supervision of staff in their respective areas of operation.
- Serving as core staff in conducting Information Literacy (user education) programmes.
- Providing professional leadership in processing of library materials
- Representing the University Librarian on School Boards and some University committees.
- Any other library duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Form 5 or Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- A good first degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) from a recognised University.
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a recognised university
- At least three (3) years service in an academic library.
- Computer literate with practical knowledge of automated library management systems.
- Evidence of research output
- Demonstrate leadership and a strong sense of initiative. Self starter.
- Highly motivated and dynamic with an optimistic outlook.
- Membership to Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) and / or other relevant professional body would be an advantage
- SUB–LIBRARIAN (SYSTEMS) (1 position)
Location: Kitwe
Job Purpose
To oversee all aspects of application of the library management system, provide first line technical support on PCs and other ICT working tools, troubleshooting, training and liaison.
Main Duties and Accountabilities
Within the delegated authority from the University Librarian, the System Librarian is responsible for the following duties:
- Providing leadership and supervision to the library ICT services and Information Systems.
- Developing effective recommendations on system designs and applications required to meet library and Information Management business.
- Planning, Implementing and managing operations related to the development , upgrading and the day to day administration and the maintenance of the information system in the Library including the integrated Library Management System (Liberty 5), Repositories, Databases (eGrenary Digital Library and other online information resources).
- Managing equipment, software and related resources required for digitization, developing Library websites, accessing online resources and services and other information and communication technology applications used by the Library.
- Troubleshooting and providing continuing user support, to include resolving difficult problems, advising on the new techniques, monitoring transactions to measure performance and continued effectiveness of the information systems in the Library.
- Ensuring appropriate systems security and access controls are maintained considering both local and wide area network issues.
- Managing projects involving feasibility studies, systems analysis, design, development and implementation of new information systems for the Library.
- Developing disaster recovery plans and ensures appropriate planning and training of those responsible (Systems backup).
- Participating in writing reports and papers on systems-related topics, systems requirements, information strategy, etc.
- Maintaining effective liaison with the University Directorate of Information and Communications Technology system vendors (SoftLink) for support to the technology infrastructure of the Library.
- Providing guidance to, and supervising new/ subordinate staff.
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Form 5 or Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- A good first degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) or Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from a recognised University.
- A Master of Science degree in Information Science (MSc. IS) from a recognised University would be an advantage.
- At least three (3) years service in a similar position.
- Professional certification in ICT.
- Evidence of research output.
- Demonstrate leadership and a strong sense of initiative. Self starter.
- Highly motivated and dynamic with an optimistic outlook.
- Membership to Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) and / or other relevant professional body would be an advantage.
- ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN (2 positions)
Location: Ndola (1), Chinsali (1)
Job Purpose
To perform professional library duties pertaining to collection development and management, cataloguing and classification, and Information Literacy
Main Duties and Accountabilities
- Process all library materials professionally and with efficiency under minimum supervision.
- Supervising junior staff in their sections.
- Participate in information literacy (user education) programs.
- Participate in reference work in the various sections they operate from.
- Shelf readers, who supervise the shelving work done by juniors.
- Any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Form 5 or Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- A good first degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) from a recognised university
- Computer literacy.
- Ability to professionally process and manage all types of library information resources with little or no supervision
- Working experience in a recognised academic library will be an advantage.
- Membership to Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) and / or other relevant professional body would be an advantage
- SENIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANT (2 positions)
Location:Ndola (1), Chinsali (1)
Job Purpose
To provide professional support and assist in the development, promotion and delivery of library services.
Main Duties and Accountabilities
Trained in basic professional librarianship with the capacity to manage small libraries in Schools, colleges and council libraries, .Senior Library Assistants are needed them to supervise various operations in CBU Library Sections and to handle the following tasks:
- Acquisition work
- Basic cataloguing and Classification work
- Basic documentation work ( data entry)
- Basic information technology (IT) work (database updates; etc.)
- Basic reference work
- Circulation control
- Stack management
- Rendering assistance to library users during evenings and weekends on rotational basis
- Any other duty assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- Diploma in Library and Information Studies
- Ability to professionally process and manage all types of library information resources with little or no supervision.
- Computer literate.
- Prior library work experience in a library environment would be an advantage.
- Membership to Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) would be an added advantage.
- Self motivated.
- LIBRARY ASSISTANT (11 positions)
Location: Kitwe (4), Ndola (5), Chinsali (2)
Job Purpose
To perform basic library routines and provide assistance towards the development, promotion and delivery of library services.
Main Duties and Accountabilities
- Manning service points (Circulation Desk, Short Loans Section, etc).
- Library membership registration.
- Rendering assistance to library users during evenings and weekends on rotational basis
- Carry out end processes (Labelling, stamping, securing library materials, etc.)
- Carry out reprographic services tasks
- Shelving and shelf reading work.
- Any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Full Grade 12 certificate with 5 “0” levels which should include English Language and Mathematics.
- Certificate in Library Studies
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work in a shift system, including at weekends and during evenings
- Self motivated
