The Cyber4Africa Programme: Building Secure AI for Sustainable Development in Africa

African innovators are invited to apply for the 2026 AI Hub for Sustainable Development Cyber4Africa Programme. This initiative aims to embed cybersecurity into the core of artificial intelligence development across the continent. The program recognizes that building secure systems from the outset is more effective than trying to fix vulnerabilities later. By focusing on security-by-design, Cyber4Africa seeks to foster a culture of trust and resilience within Africa’s growing AI ecosystem.

The program is designed for African AI startups that are creating solutions in sectors where cybersecurity risks are high and the impact of failure is severe. These sectors include healthcare, fintech, government technology, energy and climate technology, and AI infrastructure. The goal is to equip founders and technical teams with the knowledge and tools to build secure AI applications, thereby enhancing the credibility and safety of the entire African AI landscape.

Sectoral Focus Areas for Cybersecurity

The Cyber4Africa Programme specifically targets startups operating in five critical sectors. These areas are chosen because they face significant cybersecurity threats and the consequences of breaches can be severe.

  • Healthcare and Digital Health: Startups in this sector handle sensitive patient records and diagnostic information. Security failures here can directly impact patient care and erode public trust in digital health solutions.
  • Fintech and Financial Services: This is one of the most frequently targeted sectors globally. Cyber incidents can undermine financial inclusion efforts and damage consumer confidence in digital financial services.
  • Govtech and Civic Technology: Platforms dealing with digital identity and e-government services are crucial for institutional legitimacy. Vulnerabilities in these systems can compromise government operations and citizen trust.
  • Energy and Climate Technology: AI-driven infrastructure in these fields, such as smart grids or climate monitoring systems, faces risks where digital vulnerabilities can lead to physical disruptions and national security concerns.
  • AI Infrastructure and Data Platforms: This foundational layer supports many other AI applications. Security failures at this level can have cascading effects across numerous users, developers, and dependent systems.

Programme Structure and Support

The Cyber4Africa Programme spans six months and is structured around three key workstreams designed to provide comprehensive support to participating startups. This approach ensures that startups receive both strategic guidance and practical assistance.

  • Cyber Resilience and Awareness: Startups will receive tailored advice to evaluate their current cybersecurity status. This includes organizational awareness training and guidance on aligning with international security standards. A Cybersecurity Light Assessment will be provided at the program’s commencement to identify specific needs.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Participants will benefit from specialized training delivered through various formats. This includes webinars covering AI security fundamentals, a focused cybersecurity starter mini-course, and hands-on workshops at Cisco’s Cybersecurity Training Centre in Nairobi.
  • Technical and Operational Support: The program offers practical help for startups to strengthen their security measures. This involves expert engagement, technical office hours, and an AI Security Quick Scan to improve incident response capabilities and overall operational resilience.
