The university was, for most of its early existence, a central college of the University of St Andrews, alongside United College and St Mary’s College, based in the city of St Andrews itself. However, after the important increase, the University of Dundee gained independent university status by royal charter in 1967, retaining much of its former heritage and governance structure.

The University of Dundee’s main campus is situated in Dundee’s West End, which contains most of the university’s teaching and research facilities, the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee Law School and Dental Hospital and School.

The university also has extra facilities at Ninewells Hospital, which contains its medical school Perth Royal Infirmary, which houses a clinical research centre, and in Kirkcaldy, Fife, which contains School of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The University of Dundee traces its history to the former University College located in Dundee and the University of St Andrews. However, during the 19th century, Dundee’s growing population notably increased the demand for the formation of an institution of higher learning in the city and different organizations were founded to further this goal, including a university club in the city.

The university has grown a lot since gaining independence, from just four converted buildings when the University College was established in 1881, the university has grown to consist of over fifty today.

As of 2018, the University of Dundee is ranked among the top 300 universities in the world according to major global rankings (ARWU, QS, Times, and CWTS Leiden); ranked 42nd in the CWTS Leiden Ranking, 272nd in the QS World University Rankings and 201-300 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The 2016’s 150 Under 50 rankings consist of institutions under the age of 50 ranked 16th university globally and 1st in the UK.

According to the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject, the strongest subjects at the University of Dundee are Life Sciences ranked 55th in the world and Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health, ranked 86th.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject rank Life Sciences and Medicine 146th worldwide in 2018.
