Researcher Development

The Researcher Development program is provided by the Doctoral College to help you get the best out of your time at Warwick and the best out of yourself. The program covers all disciplines and stages of research, including writing, research methods, productivity and skills, a PhD in a second language series, well-being, and support for your career. Thinking about your professional development allows you to source the support and training you need when you need it.

Researcher Development Program: The 6 Core Series

• Accelerator Series: Sessions that will get your PhD off to the best start It will bring you into contact with other new arrivals at Warwick, starting to build your professional network and peer group of colleagues.
• Essentials, productivity, and well-being are key areas that we all will need to cover no matter what our discipline and sessions to keep us on track, motivated, and meeting milestones.
• Research Practices & Methodologies series- in addition to our popular research methods training we also focus on integrity, ethics, planning, and team working.
• PhD in Second Language Series: If you are doing your Ph.D. in your second, third, or even 4th language, then we run weekly sessions focusing on writing, presenting, speaking, and navigating the strange accents and behaviors of the British.
• Writing support: we start from the basics of sentence structure through writing your first press release. We cover how to manage large volumes of material and organize your argument, signposting, and storyboard. And when you are writing, we offer retreats, proofreading circles, and creative writing sessions to deal with writer’s block. Check out our dedicated Writing page

Responsibilities of Research Students

• PGRs are responsible for complying with University regulations, communicating clearly with and actively seeking advice from their supervisors, and contributing to the research environment of their department and the wider University.
• PGRs must inform their supervisors if they plan to be away from their studies and take the initiative in raising problems or difficulties.
• PGRs are responsible for deciding when to submit their thesis for examination and must notify the University of their intention.

Changes To Registration

PGRs begin by being registered with four years full-time (or seven years part-time) to submit a thesis for examination. Requests to change registration are made through Student Records Online and by Regulation 36. Some funders have additional conditions on registration above University Regulations.

• Annual leave – a short period of leave without formally interrupting study.

• Temporary Withdrawal – pause registration for between 28 days to 2 years.
  • Authorized Absence (visa holders) – a short-term respite from a study where Temporary Withdrawal may not be desirable.
  • Resume Study – prepare to rejoin active study after a period of temporary withdrawal.
• Change Mode of Attendance – change between full-time and part-time (60%).
• Extend Registration – request additional time to submit for examination for exceptional reasons.
  • Specific advice for visa holders.
• Permanent Withdrawal – withdraw with/without leave to submit at a later date.

• For the autumn we focus on starting, maintaining, and finishing our PhD; with new arrivals, people moving into their second years, and also people into the final few months of submitting their thesis and preparing for their Vivas. So we have support for you throughout the stages of your PhD.
• Remember we also have sessions specifically for colleagues working in their second ( or third) language ( run by RD colleagues who know exactly what this is like), sessions for those doing their Ph.D. part-time, and also evening & weekend sessions if it makes it easier for you attend them around other plans.
• We are continuing with our very popular Research Methodologies, Writing Support, Well-being, and productivity sessions, so if you didn’t get a place the first (or second) time around, then get a booking.

Professional Development Framework

The PGR Professional Development Framework is based on six key themes and is intended to introduce coherence across the institution while recognizing disciplinary differences. All postgraduate researchers should have fair and comparable access to professional development opportunities that will allow them to:

• identify and develop specific skills;
• acquire the knowledge and expertise to achieve standards of excellence in their research;
• be competitive in their professional life as they move into future employment or study.

The Warwick Framework has been developed in line with the UK Research Council’s (UKRI) expectation that all postgraduate researchers will have a minimum of ten days of professional development and skills activity and that the provision of transferable skills should form a fundamental part of doctoral training.

Financial Benefits

Warwick International Scholarship 2024-25 in UK for all students from around the world is a Full Free scholarship which will cover the following:

• The Complete Payment of Tuition Fees (an amount up to £24,010)
• A maintenance stipend in line with UKRI rates (provisional £15,609 for full-time award holders in 2023/24, expected to be confirmed February 2024)
• A Research, Training and Supporting Grant (RTSG) of £5,000

Eligibility Criteria

• All EU and International Students are eligible to apply.
• Applicants for a Chancellor’s International Scholarship must also be applying for an MPhil/PhD or PhD at the University of Warwick to begin in October 2024.
• Students currently enrolled on a PhD or MPhil/PhD at the University of Warwick may apply in their first year of registration only.
• Applicants may be from any discipline at Warwick.
• Scholarships cannot be deferred to the next academic year.
