CapeNature is opening doors for young South African graduates with its Graduate Internships 2026 program. These roles offer hands-on experience in conservation and environmental work. If you have a background in ecology or GIS, this could be your chance to build skills in a key organization.

Internship Overview

CapeNature runs these internships in its Biodiversity Capabilities division. They last 18 months and pay R120,000 per year. Positions are based in Stellenbosch at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and in Cape Town. The program helps unemployed graduates aged under two years out of studies gain real-world practice in environmental management, conservation science, and GIS tools.

Available Positions

Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)

This role is at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. You will check compliance with the National Water Act and audit Water Use Licenses. Tasks include helping with license applications, turning ecological data into databases, and supporting freshwater monitoring. You will also do fieldwork and write technical reports.

Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist

Based in the Cape Town office, this position focuses on GIS support. Duties cover data collection, verification, and real-time mapping for fire management. You will build GIS databases from raw data and help with spatial analysis for conservation reports.

Minimum Requirements for Positions

For the Ecological Technician role, you need a BSc Honours or MSc in Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, Conservation Biology, or Environmental Science. Knowledge of the National Water Act is key, along with experience in SASS5 biomonitoring. Wetland assessment skills are a plus.

The GIS Technologist needs a degree at NQF Level 7 or higher in Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, or related fields. You should know ArcGIS and QGIS, plus basics of cartography and GPS.

General Requirements

All applicants must be South African citizens who are young and unemployed within the last two years. You need no criminal record and a valid Code EB08 driver’s license. Be ready to work in remote field areas.
