Program Overview
John Thompson makes industrial and utility boilers in South Africa. They plan to take on up to 20 apprentices in boilermaking and welding at their Bellville office. The training includes structured classes and real work experience to help you become a skilled artisan. The program starts after a selection process and runs through 2026.
Who Can Apply?
You must meet these basic qualifications:
- Grade 12 Technical with Metal Work, Welder’s Theory, Technical Mathematics (not Maths Literacy), and Technical Science.
- Or Grade 12 Academic with Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and Physical Science.
- Or N2 Trade Theory in subjects like Platers Theory/Welder’s Theory, Engineering Science, and Platers Drawing.
- Or NCV Level 4 in Fabrication (no Maths Literacy).
Other requirements include:
- Age between 18 and 35.
- Living in the Western Cape.
- Medically fit for the trade.
- Strong interest in engineering.
No work experience is required, as full training is given to those selected.
Selection Process
Applicants go through these steps:
- Psychometric testing.
- A 3-month trial as unskilled workers.
- Interviews at the Bellville office.
Only those who pass the trial move to the apprenticeship. Note that qualified artisans or people with Electrical, Diesel, or Fitting & Turning skills will not be considered.
