Understanding the Animal Health Technician Role

Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for these Animal Health Technician positions, applicants must meet specific educational and professional criteria. A Grade 12 certificate is the minimum educational requirement. Beyond that, candidates need an appropriate qualification at NQF Level 6 in Animal Health or an equivalent qualification recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Crucially, applicants must be currently registered with the South African Veterinary Council as an Animal Health Technician. A valid driver’s license is also a requirement, unless the applicant has a disability that prevents them from driving.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Beyond formal qualifications, the LDARD is looking for candidates with a strong set of knowledge and skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are vital for interacting with diverse stakeholders. Negotiation skills will be beneficial when discussing compliance and best practices.

Effective time management is necessary to handle multiple tasks and deadlines. Computer literacy is a must for using various systems and software. Strong report writing skills are needed to document findings and progress. Candidates should also be knowledgeable about key legislation such as the Animal Diseases Act, the Animal Identification Act, and the Meat Safety Act. Familiarity with disease control programs and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) is also expected.

  • Capricorn District: Two posts are available, one for Capricorn East and one for Capricorn North-West.
  • Mopani District: Three posts are open, with two for Mopani North and one for Mopani West.
  • Vhembe District: This district has the largest number of vacancies with eight posts, spread across Vhembe East (2), Vhembe North (3), Vhembe West (2), and Vhembe Central (1).
  • Waterberg District: Two posts are available, one for Waterberg East and one for Waterberg North.
  • Sekhukhune District: Three posts are offered, one each for Sekhukhune Central, Sekhukhune East, and Sekhukhune West.

Each post has a specific reference number for application purposes. The salary offered for these positions is R397,116 per annum, corresponding to Level 08.
