The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has opened applications for the National Archives Digitisation Project under PESP Phase 6. This program targets unemployed youth in South Africa who want to gain work experience while helping preserve the country’s history. If you are 35 or younger and looking for a job in archives, IT, or administration, this could be your chance.

Programme Overview

The NFVF works with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) on this project. It is part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP Phase 6). The goal is to create jobs and digitize national archives at the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA) in Pretoria, Gauteng. Workers will handle tasks like scanning documents, managing records, and preserving audio-visual materials. Over 100 positions are available across more than 20 roles.

Available Positions

The jobs fall into several categories. Each has its own qualifications. Here is a breakdown:

Archivist Roles

  • Archivist: Arrangement and Description (15 posts): Organize and describe archive materials. You need a diploma or degree in Archival Studies or a related field.
  • Archivist: Outreach and Publications (2 posts): Handle public outreach and create publications. Same qualification required.
  • Archivist: Oral History (2 posts): Collect and manage oral history records. Diploma or degree in Archival Studies needed.

Assistant Archivist Roles

These include Reading Room, Cartographic Material, Strong Room Registers, and Sensitive Records. Most require Grade 12 or a relevant qualification. Duties involve assisting with daily archive tasks.

Audio-Visual Preservation Roles

  • Film & Video Preservation Assistants: Preserve films and videos. Needs diploma or degree in Film or related fields.
  • Sound Preservation Assistants: Work on sound materials. Audio Production qualification required.
  • Legal Deposit Audio-Visual Assistants: Manage legal deposits. Similar qualifications apply.

Administration and Records Roles

  • Administration Officer: Handle admin duties. Diploma or degree in Public Administration.
  • Records Management Officer: Manage records. Same qualification.
  • Sensitive Records Admin Officer: Deal with sensitive files. Public Administration background needed.

IT and Systems Roles

  • Systems Administrator: Requires MCSE certification and IT diploma or degree.
  • IT Support Officer: Provide tech support. IT qualification essential.

Entry-Level Opportunities

  • Scanner Operator: Scan documents. Open to Grade 10 or 12.
  • Archive Assistant Housekeeping: Keep archives clean and organized. Grade 12.
  • Conservation Assistant: Help with conservation. Basic qualification.

Driver-Based Role

  • Principal Auxiliary Officer: Drive and support operations. Needs Grade 12, Code 10 driver’s licence, and PDP.

Technical Support Role

  • Maintenance Officer: Maintain facilities. Qualification in built environment.

Minimum Requirements

You must be a South African citizen, unemployed, and 35 years old or younger. Meet the specific needs for your chosen role. Past participants in PESP programs should not apply.

Screening Process

Shortlisted candidates face checks for citizenship, criminal records, and qualifications.

Important Notes

No feedback within 30 days of the 08 April 2027 closing date means you were not selected. The location is Pretoria.
