The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) is offering a valuable opportunity for unemployed graduates to gain practical experience in the health products regulatory sector. The SAHPRA Internship Programme for 2026/2027 provides six positions for individuals looking to kickstart their careers in this important field. This 12-month program offers a monthly stipend and a chance to contribute to public health protection in South Africa.

Health Products Authorisations Unit

This unit is responsible for the authorization and approval of various health products. It plays a crucial role in the initial stages of bringing safe and effective products to the South African market. Five internship positions are available within this unit, offering exposure to the processes involved in product evaluation and registration.

Inspectorate and Regulatory Compliance Unit

This unit focuses on ensuring that health products and their manufacturers adhere to regulatory standards. It involves monitoring, inspecting, and enforcing compliance with South African laws and regulations. One internship position is available here, providing insight into the enforcement and oversight aspects of health product regulation.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be considered for the SAHPRA Internship Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria. These requirements are designed to ensure that interns are well-suited for the program and have the foundational knowledge to benefit from the experience.

Essential Criteria

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Employment Status: Applicants must be unemployed graduates.
  • Prior Internship Experience: Individuals who have previously participated in an internship program are not eligible.
  • Educational Background: A Matric certificate is a minimum requirement. Additionally, applicants must possess a National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 6 or NQF Level 7.
  • Field of Study: The qualification must be in Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related field.
  • Qualification Recognition: Qualifications must be recognized by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority). Applicants with foreign qualifications will need to provide a SAQA evaluation certificate.

Key Responsibilities of Interns

Interns will be involved in a range of administrative and regulatory functions that support SAHPRA’s core operations. These duties are designed to provide hands-on experience in the day-to-day workings of a regulatory authority.

Interns may assist with tasks such as:

  • Allocating applications and responding to queries.
  • Updating and maintaining databases and tracking systems.
  • Capturing evaluation reports and monitoring workloads.
  • Tracking application statuses and compiling statistics.
  • Supporting compliance checks and internal/external audits.
  • Liaising with internal stakeholders and managing records.
  • Assisting with workflow administration.

Program Details: Duration and Stipend

The SAHPRA Internship Programme is structured to provide a full year of valuable work experience.

  • Duration: The program lasts for 12 months.
  • Stipend: Successful interns will receive a monthly stipend of R16,666.66.
