Successful candidates will report to a Unit Manager or Operational Lead and will be immersed in a 100% on-site factory environment. The program is structured to provide comprehensive technical training alongside practical workplace exposure. This dual approach ensures that apprentices not only learn the theory behind millwrighting but also gain real-world experience in a dynamic production setting.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
As a Millwright Apprentice, your primary role will be to assist qualified millwrights with the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical equipment. This involves supporting fault finding on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. You will participate in various maintenance activities, including planned, preventative, and breakdown maintenance. Additionally, apprentices will assist with equipment installations, modifications, and commissioning processes.
On a technical level, you will learn and apply safe working procedures and engineering standards. Correct and safe use of engineering tools and measuring instruments will be a key focus. The role also includes assisting with the inspection and replacement of machine components and spare parts, contributing to continuous improvement and equipment reliability initiatives. Workplace duties extend to maintaining housekeeping standards in workshops and production areas, completing logbooks and training assessments, and working closely with production and maintenance teams to minimize downtime, all while adhering to safety, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
Required Qualifications and Skills
To be considered for the Unilever Millwright Apprenticeship, applicants must possess a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate with a strong foundation in Mathematics and Physical Science. While not mandatory, an N2 or N3 qualification or relevant engineering studies will be considered advantageous. A basic understanding of mechanical and electrical principles is expected, and computer literacy is also beneficial. The ability to work shifts and overtime when required is a necessity for this role.
