Are you a young South African looking to start a career in law enforcement? The Western Cape Government Traffic Officer Bursaries 2026 offer a great chance for Grade 12 graduates to train as traffic officers. This 12-month program provides full-time study and a monthly stipend.

Bursary Overview

The Western Cape Mobility Department runs the Student Cadet Traffic Officer Bursary Programme 2026. It targets South African youth who want to become traffic officers. Successful applicants will earn a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. The reference number is WCMD 08/2026. Training starts on 08 June 2026 at Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell.

Training Details

This is a full-time, 12-month course. You will receive a monthly stipend of R5 000. Note that the bursary covers training only. It does not include accommodation or meals. After training, placement at traffic centres is possible, but permanent jobs are not guaranteed. You must apply separately for any full-time roles later.

Minimum Requirements

To apply for the Western Cape Government Traffic Officer Bursaries 2026, you must meet these basics:

  • Hold a Grade 12 certificate.
  • Have a valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission).
  • Be physically fit.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Be under 35 years old.
  • Have no visible tattoos or body piercings (ear piercings are okay for females).

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates face several tests. You will need a medical certificate. Then, expect medical checks, psychological tests, drug tests, fitness exams, a driving assessment, a written test, and an interview. Prepare to show your skills in these areas.

Key Responsibilities

After training, traffic officers handle important tasks. These include enforcing road traffic laws, promoting road safety, and preventing crime. You will manage traffic control, do administrative work, and work shifts. Shifts can run 24/7 when needed.

Skills and Competencies

Strong candidates show good communication in at least two official languages. They have solid interpersonal skills and can work under pressure. Look for confidence, assertiveness, and the ability to work alone or in a team.
